Cansino powers Tiger Cubs over Falcons

MANILA, Philippines — CJ Cansino dished out an MVP performance in the crunch to lead University of Santo Tomas to a 73-72 overtime squeaker over Adamson and into the stepladder semis of the UAAP Season 80 juniors’ basketball tourney at the Blue Eagle Gym yesterday.

Cansino, the runaway winner in the MVP race, dropped eight of his 24 points in the extra period, capping his heroics with a crucial layup that restored a fresh 73-68 cushion in the last 1:13 that enabled the Tiger Cubs to take the last seat in the stepladder semis.

The Tiger Cubs, back in the Final Four for the first time in six years, thus arranged a KO duel with No. 3 Far Eastern on Saturday for the right to face twice-to-beat second seed National U in the second stepladder semis. Waiting in the finals is unbeaten Ateneo.

“We’re going through the eye of the needle and this was just the first step,” said UST coach Chris Cantonjos.

The Tiger Cubs, who struggled in the second round, survived their second straight must-win game. Last Sunday, they scored a 64-62 win over the defending champion Baby Tams to finish with 7-7 and force a rubbermatch for the No. 4 seed with AdU (7-7).
