Robredo camp reiterates plea to Marcos: Don't use VP to fuel senatorial plans

Romulo Macalintal, lead election counsel of Vice President Leni Robredo, said that defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos would run for senator in May 2019 as he could not afford to be politically “laidback” because this would affect his electoral chances in 2022. MANILA, Philippines — Defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos should stop using his electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo to fuel his political ambitions in the 2019 midterm polls, her lead election lawyer said on Tuesday.

Speaking in what he described as a “defensive press conference,” Romulo Macalintal, the vice president’s lead election counsel, said that Marcos would run for senator in May 2019 as he could not afford to be politically “laidback” because this would affect his electoral chances in 2022.

“We believe that Mr. Marcos is just using it (his accusations of electoral fraud against the vice president) because he will run in the 2019 senatorial elections. He said, ‘I will not run.’ He will run,” Macalintal declared.

Macalintal appealed to Marcos to stop using the “name of the vice president” to bolster his chances in 2019 senatorial elections and for media mileage.

Marcos is the son and namesake of the late Philippine dictator who committed massive human rights violations and corruption during his more than 20 years in office.

The Marcos family was chased away from the Palace in 1986 as a popular military-backed revolution raged along EDSA.

Since then, the family has tried to rehabilitate its name and has occupied key posts in their home province of Ilocos Norte and in Congress. Marcos, before seeking the vice presidency in 2016, served as a senator for several years.

If he becomes successful in winning the vice presidency, this will prove a big step in Marcos’ effort to regain the presidential palace.

Macalintal said that Marcos was just demonstrating that losing candidates in Philippine elections had the “propensity” to file election protests at all cost which showed their unwillingness to accept defeat.

Robredo’s counsel also said that the former senator may have been “ill-advised” by his lawyers on his recent claim of massive fraud based on some ballot images.

Macalintal explained that the square shapes in the ballot images, which Marcos took as evidence of cheating, were in fact discussed by the Commission on Elections in a briefing with candidates, which the son of the late dictator did not attend.

Macalintal said that the square shapes showed the ballot markings that met the minimum 25 percent threshold set by the COMELEC for a vote to be credited to a candidate.

He also urged Marcos and his lawyers to apologize to Robredo for accusing her of cheating her way to the vice presidency, saying this is a sign of being a “gentleman.”
